Canadian Council of Muslim women will be co-hosting a free family event in association with Oshawa Public Libraries on October 1st. Mayor Dan Carter will be proclaiming Islamic history month at the event and will speak briefly. We will have various activity stations: henna, colouring, craft, and information boards made by youth. Light refreshments will be served.
October is Islamic History Month in Canada, and an opportunity to learn about Muslim contributions to the sciences, humanities, medicine, astronomy, and other disciplines that have greatly benefited civil progress.
The theme this year is to share the culinary contributions of Muslims to health, wellness, social peace, and societal harmony. Find out more at https://www.islamichistorymonth.ca/
To paraphrase the essence of Prophet Muhammad’s ﷺ Hadith: “There are blessings and abundance in sharing of food” and “A Muslim is not one who sleeps with a full stomach, while their neighbours sleep hungry."

Learn how to put your best foot forward with images! In this workshop, we’ll look at editing tools and processes that are relevant to the post-production side of artwork documentation. Whether you’re uploading examples of your work to a grant application, a call for submissions, or your online portfolio, this workshop will help you share accurate and polished images of your work with funders, curators, and others who rely on photo documentation to make important decisions about you and your work.
Topics include:
- A review of digital files – what you need to know about resolution and file size
- An overview of fundamental photo-editing techniques
- An introduction to preparing image files for applications with a discussion about why good quality images matter and how to meet expectations
Please note: This workshop does not cover how to take good pictures, so it won’t cover camera types or settings, accessories, or techniques for capturing accurate colour or lighting. This workshop also isn’t about preparing digital files for print. The goal of this workshop is to provide an overview of post-production tactics for creating high quality digital images that can be used in grant or exhibition applications, or like settings.
This workshop will be hosted as a 70-minute Zoom webinar with an opportunity to ask questions at the end.

8:00 AM| Lakeview Park, Kluane Avenue, Oshawa/Municipal Boat Launch, 2 Old Rail Lane, Port Perry
The Regional Municipality of Durham, in partnership with the area municipalities, is inviting residents to attend one of the upcoming Environment Days to donate items for reuse, recycling and safe disposal.
The two events run from 8 a.m. until noon (rain or shine):
Saturday, October 29
Lakeview Park (parking lot)
Kluane Avenue, Oshawa
Saturday, October 29
Municipal Boat Launch (parking lot)
2 Old Rail Lane, Port Perry
Residents can donate items in good condition for reuse, including clothing and textiles, shoes, bedding, small household items and sporting goods. Only items deemed to be suitable for reuse by local charities will be accepted. Materials refused by charities must be removed by residents and may be disposed of at one of the Region’s waste management facilities, and fees may apply.
Residents can also safely recycle their end-of-life electronic waste at Environment Days, which helps to recover and recycle valuable resources while keeping toxic materials out of the waste stream. Examples of electronic waste include cell phones, audio and video players, VCRs, DVD and Blu-Ray players, stereos, computers, televisions, cameras, radios and more. Residents should erase personal information from hard drives and SIM cards before bringing their obsolete, broken and end-of-life electronics for safe and secure recycling.
To help ensure household hazardous waste (HHW) items are safely disposed of, and to prevent toxic materials from entering local ecosystems and water sources, residents can also bring HHW items to the Environment Days event. Examples of HHW include antifreeze, batteries, brake fluid, motor oil and filters, fluorescent light bulbs and tubes, cooking oil, medication, mercury thermostats and more. Commercial, institutional, agricultural, or industrial waste is not permitted.
Residents are encouraged to bring a non-perishable food item to be donated to a local food bank (please check that boxes and cans aren’t damaged, opened or expired). To learn more about waste management in Durham Region, or for more information including tips for attending a collection event, visit durham.ca/waste, email [email protected], call 1-800-667-5671 or download the Durham Region Waste App.
